Justice of the Peace Duties

Justice of the Peace Duties

Justices of the Peace handle a wide breadth of civil, administrative, and criminal issues.  On the civil side, JPs handle small claims, up to $20,000, debt collections, and evictions, along with performing wedding ceremonies.  On the criminal side, the court handles traffic tickets, fine-only misdemeanors, and truancy cases.

JPs also magistrate misdemeanor and felony cases, which can involve explaining the process and options to accused individuals, appointment of counsel, setting bail and bond conditions, and issuing emergency protective orders.

Williamson County does not have a medical examiner so the issuance of death certificates also falls to the Justices of the Peace.
